Beard Balm: What is it and do I really need it?
Whether you like them or not, beards are here to stay in one way, shape or form. Anyone that has grown one will testify the labor that has gone into it. From getting past the fuzz stage, the beard itch stage and all the other stages just to keep the beard in check, you’re going to need to provide some TLC along the way. That’s where beard balm comes in.
How does Beard Balm work?
Have you ever wondered what is beard balm and how does it work? A beard balm works as a leave-in conditioner which will moisturize, condition, style and soften your beard. Cremo Beard Balm contains moisturizing shea butter, sunflower oil to help condition and boost growth and beeswax which helps seal in moisture. All of these ingredients are combined to help promote proper beard growth and keep your beard healthy and smelling its best.
Beard Balm Ingredients
While all beard balms are unique and wonderful, they all typically contain these four base ingredient types:
- Carrier Oils
- Essential Oils
- Beeswax
- Malleable agent
Let’s look at these ingredients and how Cremo uses them to design an astonishingly superior beard balm.
Carrier Oils
If you’ve looked into beard products before, you’ve no doubt stumbled across carrier oils. These oils are mainly used to moisturize and nourish the skin beneath the beard. These oils can be found in Cremo Beard Balms, listed under jojoba, argan and sweet almond oil.
The science behind carrier oils happens under the beard follicle in the sebaceous gland. These glands main function is to discharge sebum oil, which in turn keeps the beard and skin moisturized and helps skin from flaking, which is extremely important if anyone has ever suffered from beard itch or beard dandruff (beardruff).
Essential Oils
Essential oils not only deliver some moisturizing and nourishing properties, but they also help deliver refreshing fragrances to the oil. Essential oils can be derived from many sources, like tea tree mint, lemon, lavender, lemon, citrus and many more.
Cremo Beard Balms come in many different scents, like our Forest Blend, Mint Blend, Bourbon Blend and Reserve Blend, each with its own wonderful scent and each containing its own unique essential oils to deliver the scent. That said, don’t take our different fragrance’s as essential oils. Essential oils make part but not all of the fragrance in our products.
Our fragrances were designed by top scent experts, also known as ‘noses’. We scoured the globe to find the people at the top of their game. We know the way you it smells is just as important as the way i omis
Beeswax
Beeswax has many great properties for use in a beard balm. The wax itself helps solidify the product. Without it, the product would be more like a liquid. It also acts as a protectant from some pollutants and gives the beard some hold, meaning it is great to style with.
Malleable agent
In Cremo Beard Balm we put in the ingredient shea butter. This butter is found in a variety of products and does a fantastic job to convert beard balm from a waxy substance into something more malleable. Shea butter also adds another layer of moisture to the product, which in turn helps keep the beard healthy.
How to use and apply Beard Balm?
Rub a finger on the balm in a circular motion until you have a small dollop on your fingertip. Work between palm and fingers until the product feels warm and supple. Then, apply to beard, styling it into its desired shape in the process. For bonus points, use a beard comb to help make sure your beard is looking its best.
Do I need Beard Balm?
Is beard balm necessary? As with any beard product, it’s all down to the individual and their needs. A Beard Balm is another product in any beard arsenal that helps keep the beard healthy and moisturized. For new and existing beards, this is extremely important, as anyone with a beard will testify to how hard it is to grow and maintain. As with most things, trial and error are key to finding out what works best for your beard.
Can I use Beard Balm and other beard products
Short answer – Absolutely.
Long answer – All beards need different things to survive the harsh realities of life and different environments and climates. We recommend adopting a routine to keep your beard in best physical shape. This starts with washing it daily, drying it properly and adding moisture back in to any dry parts of the beard. Differing beard approaches, however, mean that some people swear to not use a beard balm and a beard oil together. The theory behind this is that wax and oil don’t mix well together and the fragrance can sometimes be affected.
